What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Five

Posted by Dave Letcavage

Tying up loose ends and going next gen.

The Playstation 4 has launched in North America today. The Xbox One will be unleashed upon the world one week from now. Some of the biggest holiday releases - like Assassin's Creed 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Battlefield 4 - have already made their debut. Needless to say, there's a lot to play, and even more to look forward to. So the question is, "what games are you playing this weekend?"

Are you squeezing the last bit of life out of your console that's on the way out? Reorganizing your entertainment center to accommodate the newest member of your family? Or are you too consumed by the latest online shooters to be distracted by anything else?

For our staff, it's a mixture of those things, and you can read about it all below — but be sure to stick around until the end, we want to hear your plans as well!

Given that I traded in most of my games last week in order to have some store credit put to one side for those last-minute launch day impulse purchases, I'll be keeping it simple. WWE 2k14 is a title that is definitely lacking, but I've still got some bits to finish off, so I'll be headed into the squared circle once again. I might finally fire up Beyond: Two Souls, and have a crack at finishing Ni No Kuni as well. If all else fails, there's always Grand Theft Auto V waiting to welcome me back into its arms.

Thanks to a super sweet sale at Target, I've nabbed copies of DuckTales: Remastered, Mario Kart 7, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for next to nothing, so I'm sure all of those will get some play time this weekend. I'm also working on a top secret review for Nintendo Life that will keep me plenty busy.

On the Xbox front, I plan on raising my kill to death ratio even further in Call of Duty: Ghosts and spend any left over time toppling high scores in Pinball FX 2. I've been attempting to master the Captain American and Plants vs. Zombies tables lately, and I still have a little ways to go!

I'll be getting my grubby hands on the PlayStation 4 this weekend with some friends who have had them pre-ordered for quite some time. So I'll be diving into Killzone: Shadow Fall, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Call of Duty: Ghosts to welcome me into next-gen territory. Outside of that, I've been enjoying the mystery and humour in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destines too. Finally, I'll be wrapping up episode one of The Wolf Among Us and hopefully get the review up for pX sometime next week.

This weekend I will be happily settled in my gaming room playing Battlefield 4. DICE have taken the best features of Bad Company and Battlefield 3 and created a hugely enjoyable multiplayer experience which can be awe inspiring at times! The gameplay is now even more team focused than ever before and there are moments which are truly awe inspiring.

In my down time I will be building my empire in Caesar III, an old PC title that is only beaten by Theme Hospital in my top five most replayed games of all time. I also have my Tiny Death Star to maintain on iPhone so between these three I fear Monday will come all too quickly!

I will be playing XCOM: Enemy Within to my heart’s content, as it’s one of my favorite strategy titles from way back when. I may even jostle with Iron Brigade since it will be the free title for Games with Gold starting the 16th. Unfortunately these will be probably be the last Xbox 360 games I play as I’m going completely next-gen at launch so I will be savoring every last minute until that point – although I may break out the Nintendo DS for some Advance Wars action to tie me over as well, there’s just something about turn-based strategy games that’s invigorating.

It's November, and shooter season is well and truly underway! This weekend, I'll mainly be playing Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

I've bitten off more than I can chew, Wii U-wise, and still have to get through The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Batman Arkham Origins. Whew!

Now it's your turn. Expose your weekend gaming plans in the comments below!

Nice Theme Hospital reference! Loved that game!

I'll be finishing off the campaign for BF4 this weekend. Seeing that there are multiple achievements for different endings in that game I decided I wanted to do one playthrough on 360 and then experience it properly on Xbox One for the second. Not sure I enjoy the campaign enough to go through a 3rd time though.

I did the same thing, campaign is pretty bad, but grunted through it to get all 3, but you can just replay the last mission over twice and you'll pop each achievement.

COD Ghosts will likely come into play this weekend but with Dave's mention of Mario Kart and Smash Bros I may have to get a few pals together for some friendly competition!

I've got a busy work schedule this weekend so I'm going to limit the amount of PS4 launch games I play so I can fully appreciate them when I get the chance. It'll be Killzone: Shadow Fall and Contrast, both of which I'm really enjoying, maybe on Sunday, if I'm not too busy I'll finally fire up Assassin's Creed IV. I really want to play it but I also want to be able to have the time needed to get into the experience, AC isn't a 30-60 minute pick up and play kind of game.

@MegaKillScreen: OMG I love Caesar III, I still have that game installed on my PC along with the other games in that series (Pharaoh, Zeus, and Emperor). Such fun addicting games even to this day.

Anyway back on topic I will be playing AC IV and some of the free games on my brand new PS4.
