Halo: Spartan Assault Skips XBLA, Invades Windows 8

Not coming to XBLA
While this may not be directly related to the Xbox 360 or Xbox One consoles, this is definitely worth noting when it concerns Microsoft's biggest franchise in the industry.
Announced today, Halo: Spartan Assault is coming exclusively to Windows 8 smartphones, tablets and PCs. That's right, Windows 8 is getting it's first true killer gaming app and it's a top-down twin-stick shooter co-developed by Vanguard Games (Gatling Gears) and 343 Industries. Taking place between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4, the game spans 25 missions all based around UNSC Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis. There are different mission types such as protection, escort, survival and seek and destroy.
Information from Eurogamer confirms that a 360 controller can be used for the PC version as a replacement for the traditional mouse and key layout through a downloadable patch. 343 Industries said that while Spartan Assault does not include any multiplayer, they will consider adding it post-release but in the mean time, gamers can compete through leaderboards and weekly challenges. In-App purchases are imbedded as well, where users can pay for in-game credits which can be used to upgrade your Spartan stats and abilities.
Judging from the launch trailer, Spartan Assault is looking to show off the true graphical power of mobile devices with a smooth framerate, clean animations and that cool Halo sheen throughout.
While it's understandable Microsoft wants the Halo series to remain within their exclusive rights, we can't help but wonder about the success Spartan Assault would achieve through other mobile platforms like Apple's iOS and Google's Android systems. It's equally disappointing knowing that it won't hit XBLA where we think feels like a complete missed opportunity that hopefully, will see corrected somewhere down the line.
Windows 8 owners can expect to download this in July for $6.99 (Price for the UK has yet to be revealed). You can take a look at the announcement trailer below.
