Bioshock and Tomb Raider Boost UK Market

Posted by Ken Barnes

Revenue up, sales down.

As is usually the case, the UK game industry went through a bit of a boost in March, after a quiet first two months of the year.

Even with two of the main players in the console market coming into their twilight years, releases such as Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, and Gears of War: Judgment helped get the cash registers ringing, with a total of 2.67m games sold at retail. That's down 1.5% on last year.

But due to the "triple A" status of said titles, the market as a whole took a 4.2% boost in terms of cash, pulling in £67.7 million. This sets the industry up nicely for what should be a blockbuster year, that will - hopefully - feature two new console launches, and a lineup of pre-Christmas releases that should at the very least match the best of recent years.

In terms of boxed sales, Tomb Raider won the month outright, and the full top ten is as follows:-

1. Tomb Raider
2, Bioshock Infinite
3. Gears of War: Judgment
4. FIFA 13
5. SimCity
6. Crysis 3
7. God of War: Ascension
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
9. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2
10. Far Cry 3

Impressive performance from both Gears and God of War considering they're exclusive to one console and were total cash-ins, still great games though and glad to see perform well. Tomb Raider and Bioshock: Infinite definitely deserve those top two spots. NPD numbers should be coming soon, will be interesting to see how the U.S. game market did. It's been a rough go for the market over here for the last year.
