Yup, they certainly were, quality at the time was phenomenal though. I also saw the very first CD player (the actual player) imported into the UK as I used to service Sony's computer systems. The MD demoed it to me in his office and to my shame, I told him that I didn't think that they would ever catch on as the covers were too small and most people loved their covers at that time. I was really impressed by the resilience and audio quality though. I then went out into the car park to find my car almost buried in snow.

I'm 50/50 so far. If its a game I want new I always get a disc, but I have quite a few games digital due to being on sale (Forza 5, Lego Marvel, Watch_dogs, Zoo Tycoon) and I own Destiny digital because its a game I play a lot.

@bobbypaycheque - Yes very convenient. That 15-30 minute wait is a once only deal... how long would it take you to go to a store and buy a game or order it online and wait for delivery? Also you can no longer just pop a disc in anyway... the first time you do it has to install. 4TB drives are pretty cheap now too.

I buy most of my films off the Xbox Video store these days and supplement that with Amazon Prime Instant Video and Now TV (Sky). The Xbox Video movie quality is indistinguishable from Bluray for me and the Smartglass enhanced ones are terrific if you like bonus material on traditional discs. The added benefit of having my movie collection in the cloud is it's available on all my devices, wherever I am. If I'm in a hotel and fancy watching a movie I get my Surface out and browse through my collection and watch one (Hotel wifi permitting lol). Amazon Prime quality is excellent too - only Now TV lets the side down as I think it's limited to 720p for some reason and the video quality does appear a little soft but I use that for watching TV Shows that I wouldn't want to purchase anyway.

As you say it's not even like you can pop a physical One game in the drive straight away and play either. Everything has to be installed and with my pretty good internet the speed of downloading is about the same as the speed of installing.

I'm digital about 80% of the time now, the only hang over being if I have found a really good deal on the physical copy. And I mean REALLY good, saving a few quid isn't enough to offset the convenience of having everything on my HDD and easily accessible.

It feels weird not being able to ban people

When it comes to choosing physical/digital, I oftentimes don't get much of a say in the matter. Games that turn up for review are provided one way or the other. Most publishers have switched to digital because it's just more cost effective (or it should be, at least!) for them to provide code that way, but there are still a few that provide on disc only. One has turned up this week, in fact.

When I'm buying games, I will often choose physical copies as I can trade in other titles that I've bought and gotten bored of. Plus, they're often much cheaper than the digital copies, which is utter lunacy. I could switch regions and buy things cheaper, I'm told, but there are a few legal hoops that mean I'm not allowed to do that in my position.

When it comes to movies, Netflix US, Amazon Instant Video, and Xbox Movies all the way. Only time I buy BR discs now is if I definitely want an item in my collection (Ghibli movies) or if I absolutely cannot wait for it to hit the digital services - and it's usually available on Xbox Movies before it hits the shelves anyway.

I would say for me, at the moment, I buy more physical than digital. I do like the convenience of digital but the price difference is too much for me. Also, if I have it on disc and it's not to my liking I can sell. If ms brought the price more in line with physical and had some way to sell on the digital, I would go 100% digital.

@CunningSmile - well, I'm usually out and about to get food or some such, I don't know anybody who never leaves their house and so therefore digital is that much more convenient. Internet connection speed plays a big part too I think, most people still don't have fast enough internet. Even if I did make a dedicated trip to the store I could go there, buy the game and get back before it finished downloading. Plus for collecting purposes discs will outlast the servers.

@SuperKMx - hopefully ISP infrastructure is capable of keeping up with 4K. Bandwidth caps are common where I live too, and the ISP throttles connection when watching Netflix etc. ISP's need to provide a better service for streaming if all digital is going to be the future of movie consumption.

Digital all the way for me. I used to be quite attached to the 'old' way of buying a physical product and hoarding them but as time has passed I've slowly grown to accept and now love digital media. I've ripped all my CD's, DVD's and Blurays and only buy and stream digital films and tv shows now - bar the odd 3D film.

Same for games... As digital versions of 360 games have appeared in sales I've sold my physical copies on eBay. The Xbox One is my first digital only console and I love it. No more mountains of DVD cases to store in the living room. No more searching for that copy of a game that I know I have... somewhere. All my games are right there on my screen to browse through and I can load them up by voice command. If I get bored I can just load up another and another without having to get up off the sofa. Space isn't an issue as I've hooked up a 4TB HDD. Download times also not an issue (unless servers are v busy) as I've got 120mb broadband. Games download in about 15 - 30 minutes.

I admit digital games are more expensive (usually) and you can't trade them... I do what I can to mitigate this by buying the MS vouchers online at reduced prices but in the grand scheme of things I don't mind paying more for the convenience and pleasure that owning them digitally gives me.

Guess its a lifestyle choice... Like the fact that I own a gas guzzling V8 - I know I'm paying over the odds to run it but the pleasure i get driving it far outweighs the costs for me.

Copy and paste for me. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I'll buy stuff digitally if it's cheap enough to warrant it, which it usually isn't. It might be more convenient, but in a time when I'm not exactly rolling in it, whichever is cheapest wins out for me, and I would imagine it's the same for most people. MS haven't quite grasped the concept of 'sale' yet - even their reduced prices tend to be more than it costs to buy physically. They had Lego Batman 3 on sale for £35 odd the other week - I bought it from ShopTo for £26 the same day. That just isn't going to work. So, whilst they may not have much competition in terms of digital retailers, they most certainly are losing out to physical retailers.

I also like having the option to trade in and get money back when I'm done with a game. If I've got 100% or completed it and am unlikely to touch it again, to be able to get rid of it and put the money towards something else is a huge bonus. 90% of the Infinity stuff I got for Xmas was purchased with store credit from trade ins. Saved about £150.

I also don't think the extra cost outweighs having to get up and change a disc to play another game. Seriously, it takes less than a minute to do that.

I have a couple of digital games, but only because they were free, cheap or Arcade games. I never consider buying new digital for several reasons: They cost a LOT more, have no resale value and take a long time to download. I see absolutely no benefit in digital.

You don't stop gaming because you get old, you get old because you stop gaming.

I live in a multi console, multi gamer tag household and all digital makes perfect sense for us. We bought Zoo Tycoon and Dead Rising 3 as physical copies at launch and then traded them both in for credit to buy them digitally, those were the only physical games we've bought for this generation and we are fully converted to digital now. I don't think the price difference is too bad, especially when we have the opportunity to share games between our living room console and our personal consoles in the games room - it just works out much more practical and economical than when we had to buy 2 copies of every game that had multiplayer and that price difference offsets any benefit we would have gained from trade ins.
Obviously I'll buy the new Borderlands as a physical copy to get the RC Claptrap, but I'll most likely trade the game itself for Microsoft credit and keep only the toys in the box. Digital is just much more suited to my lifestyle and gaming habits.
Also, it means I don't have to go to GAME and listen to people prattle on about disc care, trade in, loyalty card, digital, preorder, add on items, pre-owned alternatives and whatever else the current 'MUST MENTION' topics are for every customer. And being rid of that headache alone would be worth an extra 25% per game to me.

Testify! I find a blank stare and saying "what?" each time they go through the spiel quite effective...........
I did enjoy sweet revenge the day I told the girl in GAME I had a few games to trade in, then dumped 75 on the counter, and demanded she price CEX! evil snigger
