Jaz007 opened a similar post on PushSquare and I'm just curious what the answers would be in here.

In my case, the first 4 might switch positions depending on my mood but, anyway, this is my top 5:

#1 Donkey Kong Country 2 - soundtrack, visuals, gameplay
#2 Super Mario World - visuals, soundtrack, gameplay
#3 Ocarina of Time - story, soundtrack, gameplay
#4 Majora's Mask - side quests, gameplay, soundtrack
#5 Resident Evil Remake (HD) - atmosphere, visuals

I could easily add Project Zero 2 Wii Edition, Wave Race Blue Storm, Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007, Super Mario Kart and a lot more. [EDIT: And Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze!]

Yes, this is the first generation I get a PS and an Xbox so I'm a newbie here and at PS forums, although I have played PS and Xbox at friends'.

I... I don't think I'm brave enough to participate. I have an unnumbered top 10 list that I keep updated in a Word doc on my desktop, but it would be gut-wrenching to narrow it down to just five games. Plus, I've lumped together the entirety of the Donkey Kong Country series into one spot, because otherwise I'd have DKC2, 3, Returns, and Tropical Freeze taking up nearly half of my list. I love that series to death.

Yeah, I can't really decide anything beyond my top two which I don't see changing. Those are Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Ryno

Mine is SNES heavy:

1) A Link To The Past - Takes me back to 1991. Gaming perfection.
2) Super Metroid - This games nails atmosphere better then any game I have ever played. The music, the sprites, the adventure is just pure joy.
3) Mega Man 2 - The NES is my 2nd favorite system behind the SNES, and this is my favorite game from that console. Killer soundtrack and fun challenge.
4) Xenoblade Chronicles - Best video game OST and incredible landscapes that I wanted to visit in real life. My favorite game with polygons.
5) Secret of Mana - I'm a sucker for good music and Action RPG's are my my favorite genre so this goes here.

Wow, this is tough.......

1) Zelda: A Link to the Past. I played this in Boots when I was a student, then immediately went out and blew most of my grant on a SNES.
2) KI Arcade : Man, I don't even want to think how much money I put into this machine.
3) Gran Turismo : At the time, I had never seen anything like this game. Plus Dualshock!
4) Final Fantasy VII : Still blows me away now, and brings a tear at the end of disc one.
5) Bad Company 2 : 986 hours in online alone, met most of my friends list playing this game. Shooty perfection.

@DRL: If you already have that list, you can name 10 games if you want and you can post your list as it is now, my list can slightly change, too. I'd like to see yours.

@Utena-mobile Interesting unusual list!

@Gamer83 Lot of love for A Link to the Past.

@Ryno Secret of Mana has a great soundtrack but I fell in love with its visuals.

@shonenjump86 I was curious about your top 5 because normally you have a few games in your memories that are above all others.

@Red620Ti: I spent my coins on KI2 arcade! LOL I never beat it until I got KI Gold though.

I've actually made a video on my top 12 favourite video games, however, I can't remember how to actually link videos into comments at this moment. Given it's related to the topic, if I remember to do so, I'll link the video here.

That is my top 12 favourite video games though, and this is focused on my top 5 favourite video games, so that is all I shall list. Thinking back on said video though, I feel I should have swapped around the 5th and 4th placed choices, but I'll do that here. My top 5 favourite video games are as follows;

5) Ristar - A wonderfully designed game from it's protagonists to it's levels and to it's sounds. The game oozes with charm and it's simple but effective gameplay makes it a joy to play.

4) Super Smash Bros Brawl - I love plenty of fighting games and Wii games, but this one tops both those classifications. A blast to play not only in multiplayer, but also it's many extra features such as the Subspace Emissary and stage builder.

3) Sonic Adventure - A plethora of gameplay variety and a story telling method that I absolutely love ensures this game remains close to my heart. Some accuse it of having aged quite a bit, but I've played through it recently, and still find it to be one of the best games I've ever played.

2) Final Fantasy IX - The game that made me fall in love with turn based role playing games and the entire fantasy genre; Final Fantasy IX is a fantastic game. With a memorable cast of characters and gameplay mechanics I do adore (I loved learning new skills via the equipment), it still stands as my 2nd favourite video game of all time.

1) Kirby's Fun Pak (otherwise known as Kirby Super Star) - My absolute favourite video game of all time; cementing my love for the Kirby series. Gameplay is solid across all modes; modes given slight variations, but always fun. I've played through this game countless times, be it on my own or with each of my three brothers, and all my memories of this game are fond ones.

I decided to list it with the 5th game first because I prefer building up to the number 1 spot on the list. It's a bit anti-climatic to have it be the first thing shown on a top 5 list.

Here's my 5 favorite games as of 5 seconds ago when I made this list:
WarioWare: Twisted
Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Ghost Trick
SteamWorld Heist
Metal Gear Solid IV

Ask me tomorrow and you'll probably get a slightly different list. Ghost Trick and Twisted are locks though.

I could make a top 5 list with just Fire Emblem and Monster Hunter games alone. I'll try not to do that.

1) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
2) Fire Emblem Awakening
3) DKC Tropical Freeze
4) Zelda Link Between Worlds
5) Final Fantasy X

And an honorable mention to Xenoblade X. It would be next on the list. And, I love the retro games I grew up with, but... I just find these better.

@Gamer83
You should try A Link Between Worlds on 3DS. You would love that game. It's definitely different than LttP, but still so good.

1. Morrowind. First proper open world game I played. Still love it.
2. Fable. Love em or hate em, I love em.
3. Alan Wake. It was off the wall and occasionally scary as sh..t.
4. Lord of the Rings Online. I can't begin to contemplate how much time I sank into that game.
5. Borderlands (The first one). Hard to beat, Diablo style loot and laughs.

@Red620i's Bad Company 2 should be in there as well but I don't quite know where to slot it. As should Lost Odyssey... Ditto.

@Souldin: I played Ristar when I got Sonic Mega Collection. I had always been curious about it and yep, it's a nice game, my favourite feature is to launch Ristar. I've played Sonic Adventure DX on GameCube but the camera ruined it for me. I have Super Smash Bros. Brawl but I'm yet to play Final Fantasy IX. I have Kirby Super Star Ultra Deluxe, if that's the correct name, on my DS. I'm not a fan of Kirby but that one is pretty good.

@tylertreese: I am a fan of Ace Attorney series and Metal Gear Solid IV is really good.

@sorethumbed: I haven't played any of them, I think I'll learn a bit about them.

@JaxonH: I should have named Tropical Freeze. The original Donkey Kong Country is probably my favourite game/s. The mix of nature, great gameplay and level design and brilliant soundtrack wins my heart. I have fond memories of DKC2 but now I'm replaying DKC3 and it's awesome too. They managed to add more elements and still create a wonderful platformer. Fire Emblem Awakening is the best 3DS original game, in my opinion. I keep on playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, too, but I haven't reached my Monster Hunter 3 (Wii) level yet. I bought Final Fantasy X for PS4 but I haven't played yet. I have to disagree about your Zelda choice, though (check my list for details).

@DRL: Check my answer above for details about my love for DKC games. Metroid Prime was a game that really made me feel I was in there, I can't forget the vision of myself playing it for the first time. Metroid Prime 2 was another great experience with its darkness and weird glowing effects. Another world, totally. Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie are awesome games, I love the bear and bird adventures and I almost bought a Xbox 360 for the updated versions. I skipped the Xbox and Xbox 360, but...

Until now I did not have a Xbox of my own but today, I received my Xbox One Elite pack!!!! So now I'm officially a Xbox newbie. I had already bought some games: Halo Master Chief Collection, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Resident Evil Origins Collection and Rare Replay (the game that made me bought an Xbox One for myself!), so those are my four game this far.

Ok I gotta re-do my list. I totally forgot some of my all time fave games (there's just so many).

1) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
2) Metroid Prime Trilogy (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is my fave though)
3) Fire Emblem Awakening (will soon be replaced with Fire Emblem Fates)
4) DKC Tropical Freeze
5) F-Zero GX

@VanillaLake
I know the console Zelda entries offer a lot more, I was just really impressed (and perhaps a bit nostalgic) with Link Between Worlds. Re-evaluating, I'd probably go with Twilight Princess (soon I can say the HD version). I loved Skyward Sword- had the best puzzles and boss fights in the series, but the control niggles dampened the experience.

@Vanillalake most of them are old.
LOTRO is PC only (Having said that, I've just loaded it up for the first time in ages and had a blast). It gets the F2P model absolutely spot on. You can buy stuff or earn the points in game to buy it. OK, some things will take a long time to save up for but you can get them. For instance, once you've cleared the first area proper and as long as you completed the tasks you've got enough points for a horse. As you were given a 24 hr horse token at the start then you're pretty much never horseless as long as you clear it in a real world day. (Clock ticks when ur offline).
Morrowind best played on a PC (Mods - the game is ALMOST a pain without some of them. Eg Fast Travel multimark mod).
Fable was reissued recently and is definitely worth a punt. IMO I is best followed by 2 then 3.
Alan Wake is weird - you scare enemies off with a torch but very atmospheric and tense. It's a marmite game though.
Borderlands - still fantastic again 1-2 then meh.

RR529
  • Final Fantasy X (PS2)
  • Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN)
  • Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
  • Metroid Fusion (GBA)
  • Super Mario World (SNES)

It's really tough to narrow it down to a top 5, as there are many great games it pains me to leave out, so I really sort of chose more of a top 5 influential games, even though it's been years since I've played many of these (I've only replayed SMW & Metroid Fusion in recent memory). I may pick up the Wii version of TP sometime this year though, as it's quite inexpensive thanks to the "Selects" release.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
