The red ring of death only happens on the old original xbox 360. The new slim model 360 actually does not have the red LED lights built into it so it can't actually get the RRoD (LOL) But its possible for the new slim to still overheat. When the xbox gets the RRoD it is caused by the system over heating. This will happen when leaving the system on for very long periods of time or just by using the xbox over time it will happen to the xbox. There is a very high failure rating for all the old xboxs so yes, this will most likely happen to every original 360 over time. You can help it by keeping the xbox in a very open place and not on top of, or under any other electronics. You can keep a fan blowing towards it just to keep air moving in that corner of thee room. Also keep the Xbox flat (horizontal). When you put the xbox up Vertical, you are actually speeding up the RRoD process.
**So basically if you are going to buy any new xbox 360 SLIM in stores, you dont have to worry about those 360s breaking on you. They are built very well and will last you a long time. The new slim only has a 3% failure rating which is very close to the ps3 now
