Microsoft designed the Xbox console to have specific codes which correspond to different errors with the console and each of the lights surrounding the power switch have a different meaning As there are 4 lights that surround the power switch there are 4 different types of critical errors that indicate internal system failures. If the chip is damaged then one of the lights will flash, this chip is very sensitive so care is needed when moving the Xbox console around. When two of the lights flash red it is a warning that the console is overheating. If this happens to you do not panic simply switch the console off and let it cool right down before restarting it again.

When three red lights start flashing it is a hardware failure and this could be one of the internal electronic components malfunctioning or perhaps the solder snapping off the GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) or may be for a number of other reasons that are not visible and this is just part of the wear and tear of the unit over time.

When 4 red lights flash it indicates power problems so check the cables are not hanging out of the console and push all of them in properly

Once you know what the red lights mean it is relatively easy to distinguish the error and to fix it. A lot of these problems are easy to fix but you do have to know what you are doing and by reading up on your console you will have that knowledge.
