The Red Ring of Death for Xbox 360

It has just happened. You just got the dreaded three rings lighting up around the power on button in Microsoft’s ultimate gaming experience. The seventh generation console has just stopped working.

This is a major repair and if your console is still under warranty you can expect a replacement console from Microsoft on most occasions.

But what can you do if the warranty has expired. Buy a new Xbox 360? Not necessary. Just a read bit longer to get an idea.

Well the red lights commonly known as section 1, 3 and 4, flash to show that the console is experiencing a general hardware fault. It can be attributed to a break down in the Southbridge Chipset located in the motherboard. The graphics chip could be broken. The Cold Solder Joints could be reason.

The Red Ring can be the result of the console not receiving satisfactory power from the Power Supply Unit. This may be because you have connected the power cords improperly or the PSU could be at a mechanical fault or the console may be under a power surge. If you had witnessed lockdowns on XBox 360 at different moments of games in the past, you could have expected the chance of the console getting the Red Ring.

Using the Secondary Error Codes you can improve the chances of identifying the correct fault. Pressing the sync up knob after you switched on the Xbox 360 console obtains the secondary error codes. They are given as a binary message with each a red light conveying either a ’0′ or a ’1′.

What ever the fault the red rings in the Xbox 360 only means one thing – your unit is no longer usable. But with proper guidance, some of the faults can be repaired quite comfortably.
