Disadvantages: None
This one of the classic games that defined Nintendo during the years featuring the N64 and Playstation. Both systems had their own exclusive and successful titles but this is seen to be one of the best.
After Mario’s success in 2D platforming games, the designers at Nintendo set out to re-design Mario to fit into this new gaming era where 3D graphics were the key to success. Was this re-design successful? Of course it was.
Mario 64 is considered to be one of the greatest games ever, it took Mario out from his 2D adventures and stuck him in 3D scenarios. What made this game a real success was the open world gameplay. You could pick limited levels to start with but by the time you had completed a few levels you could pick and choose what levels to complete. The actual levels themselves were also key to this game’s success. The worlds were truly massive with plenty of things to do and explore. Snowy worlds, lava furnaces, green plains, watery worlds all stood out for gamers experiencing the game. The graphics were fantastic with great attention to detail being paid to making the game look great.
The levels themselves featured around 6 stars you had to unlock and complete and all of which were pretty different, some of them involved some simple platforming skill, others involved racing koopa troop or giant penguins, solving puzzles, collecting red coins as well as plenty of others. The boss battles in the game were also pretty impressive with Bowser being re-created in 3D along with Mario’s old nemesis the goombas.
The game will take a while to complete as there are 120 stars to collect and even though you can complete the game without collecting them all you won’t truly be satisfied until you do!
This title is and always will be a true classic and it set the standard for 3D platforming games for the future and not many have matched let alone beaten this game in terms of top quality gaming!
The DSi game also features a selection of mini-games which you can play on your own or with some friends. It also lets you play as either Mario, Luigi, Wario or Yoshi in the main game whereas in the original you could only play as Mario.
Summary: Mario’s debut in 3D is a complete success and one you must own!
If you don’t already own this title you should pick it up. It is available on the Nintendo 64 or you can also get it on the Nintendo DSi. You can get a Free Nintendo DSi to play it on here!
