Write Anything to Solve the Puzzles
Vocabulary is important because it’s how you get through the game. You must think of what to write in order to solve the puzzles, but it’s nothing like you’ve seen before. The words you type or write become objects in the game. If you write ladder, a ladder appears. If you write airplane, an airplane appears. Then you use the objects to solve the puzzles.
One puzzle asks you to refresh your friend who is in the desert. It’s hot, the sun is beaming down and your friend needs to cool off. How do you refresh him? Each puzzle has more than one solution, so a number of things work.
You can write:
- Beverage to give your friend a cool drink of water.
- Milk for a cold carton of milk.
- Pool to take a dip in a swimming pool.
- Umbrella to create a cool spot shaded from the sun.
- Yogurt for a cool refreshing treat.
You can probably understand by now why a good vocabulary helps. The puzzles get more challenging as the game progresses. As you go along, you’ll need to call on more advanced objects. You might need an airplane, an elephant or a dinosaur. You never know what will or won’t work to solve a puzzle.
How it Works
Scribblenauts creator’s used dictionaries and encyclopedias to create its extensive word list. They even visited various websites searching for new words. There are thousands of words in the game. Nothing was too obscure, silly or complicated for them to include. Obscene words and copyrighted terms were the only words left out.
Words were entered into a database. Then the creator’s drew animations to go with the words. The last step was to decide how the objects would interact with other objects. You can give this a try as well with the game editor. The editor allows you to edit puzzles, choose which objects to use, and to decide how they act in the game.
