1. Power the PS3 off, unplug all the cables and let the console rest for at least half an hour. The yellow light of death can sometimes occur when the PS3 overheats after extended period of game play and in this case simply letting it cool down might solve the issue.
2. Remove the internal hard drive and put it back in. The yellow light of death can also sometimes occur if there is a problem with the connection to the hard drive, in which case the PS3 can’t load the operating system. Make sure the hard drive is properly in place and attached firmly.
3. It’s very common that these first 2 tips won’t solve the issue. The reason is because the yellow light of death is in most cases caused by a problem with the attachment of the processor (CPU) or graphical chip (GPU) to the motherboard due to overheating. But don’t worry, although this might sound like a serious error it is still easily repairable at home. Although you will have to open up the PS3 which will void the warranty. Therefore I only recommend doing this if your PS3 is out of warranty and therefore having it fixed by Sony for free is not an option anymore.
To carry out the repair I strongly recommend purchasing a professional video repair guide instead of using some free online tutorial. The advantage of this is not only that it will make the repair much easier to follow but using a free repair tutorial can also be very dangerous. Some free repair tutorials out there use unprofessional and incorrect techniques to fix the error and can cause permanent damage to your PS3.
Eliminating the risk of permanently damaging your PS3 is definitely worth $37 in my opinion.
