Halo 3 Release Date

The Halo 3 original release date was Sept. 25 in North America and the 26th in Europe. Halo 3 marked the 3rd and final installment in the amazingly popular Halo series. According to the vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business Halo 3′s release was more than just a video game release it was the biggest entertainment event of the year.  He may have been right.

The history of Halo 3 and the Halo 3 release date really starts with the release of the first game in the series Halo: Combat Evolved.  In November of 2001 when Halo was first released game consoles were somewhat of a joke for first-person shooter games.  No console shooter could compete with the popularity of games on the PC.  Halo broke new ground on the console as it was the top shooter that year for any platform.  Halo pioneered limiting the number of weapons of player could carry to 2, which meant forcing strategic decisions.

Not only did people await the Halo 3 release date, but they awaited the return of Halo’s signature fighting system. Guns, grenades and hand to hand combat was widely known as the Golden triangle of the Halo series.  In reality this was nothing new to first-person shooter games as it had existed since the very first, Doom, and even the precursor to that game, Wolfenstein.

It’s no wonder the Halo 3 release date was almost like a holiday.  Was the game popular?  Retailers were worried that the 3.1 million copies made available to them wouldn’t meet the demand.  Halo 3 sold to the tune of $300 million in its first week. It was the #1 game in the US in 2007 and to date has sold nearly eight and a half million copies.  Even the critics loved it, ranking it the seventh highest in the all-time list of Xbox 360 games.

For some people the Halo 3 release date was an occasion much like Christmas.  Will the next game in the Halo universe do as well?
