I finished a hopeless university degree in games development and thought I would never get my foot into the games industry. The degree was too spread out and all over the place; it had no specialisation.
After I graduated I decided to do the usual CV submitting and show reel making, but of course my skills were embarrassingly below standards compared with your traditional artists, it seemed it would take an eternity to gain some proper experience before I was at ‘industry level’.
So I decided to take a fresh approach and that was to begin at the bottom of the ladder so to speak. Game testing was always something that eluded me during my studies; I had friends of friends who successfully made it into Capcom to beta test the ‘new’ games which were soon to be released upon successful testing.
I would always ask them – how did you become a games tester?
They would respond “I applied online via the companies website and I guess I just got fortunate”. – utter rubbish!
This was until after various trawls on the net I discovered a system to actually getting into the industry via Game Testing; and better yet getting paid!

Being a Game Tester
If you like playing games for long sessions, then this will appeal to you – however if you lack the drive and coke levels I am pretty sure you will burn out and fall at the first hurdle.
There is one downside to beta testing and it’s a common misconception that you are going to have fun every single day. There is a lot of error report writing involved (as you are testing a game to route out bugs and letting the company know about it). However do not let this deter you as if you are obsessive about successfully getting your foot in the door as it were, then I strongly recommend you try it!
Also one last thing to note is that if you want to build on a career within video games testing, then you will need a little knowledge of programming (preferably c++ or c#) depending on the game or platform you are testing.
Becoming A Games Tester
